Marcia Price Announces Run for Delegate

December 27, 2014

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Newport News, VA On Saturday afternoon, December 27, 2014, in front of a crowd of supporters, Marcia Price announced her intention to run for Delegate for the 95th District. The event took place at the Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center. Marcia Price began by paying homage to Delegate BaCote stating that "for ten years, BaCote has fought for the citizens of the 95th District and has been a strong voice for us. I thank her for her active role in making the 95th District a better place to live and work." Price continued, "And now, it’s time for the next generation to step up and take what we have learned from those who have gone before us, to carry the torch for justice and equality."

Marcia attended Spelman College and received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy. She also received her Master of Arts in Religious Studies from Howard University. More recently Price completed coursework toward her Master of Divinity Degree at Howard University. With each program, she focused on learning as much as she could in order to return home to make a positive difference.

Price worked as a special assistant in the Virginia Liaison Office under then Governor Mark Warner and as a regional coordinator for the NAACP This Is My Vote! Campaign for voter registration, education, and mobilization. Price told the story of how her month long internship at a dental office turned into a career of dental office management because she fell in love with helping people get the care that they need. In addition, Marcia also preaches to help awaken congregations to the needs of the community. Further, she
has been active in local and state campaigns, supporting candidates that she feel has the region’s best interests at heart.

Marcia is a member of St. Augustine’s Episcopal Church and has been active in organizations like People to People, Virginia Center for Inclusive Communities, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., and Habitat for Humanity. She served on the Downing Gross Cultural Arts Center Advisory Board, the Newport News Commission on Youth, and was recently appointed by Governor McAuliffe to the Virginia Council on Women.

Price mentioned that she is a third generation resident of Newport News and that she embraces her family's legacy of service. Price stated, "I strive to make a positive impact in the Peninsula community that has given so much to me. And because of that, I want to give back in a new way. That is why today, I am announcing my intention to run for Delegate of the 95th District."

Price over the coming months will communicate her vision to both celebrate the awesome aspects of the 95th district and to improve upon those aspects that don’t accurately reflect the greatness of this district and state. The campaign will focus on supporting local public school systems, funding for early childhood education, and advocating for making higher education more accessible. Price also seeks to expand workforce development resources, ensure equal compensation for equal work, and promote job creation.

Price cautioned, "But first, we must make our district safer. I don't want to settle for a mindset of survival. I want every effort to be so that our children can thrive." She wants to help reduce violence by implementing comprehensive strategies with collaborative efforts utilizing valuable preestablished infrastructures. Price also stated that she looks forward to "hearing directly from the citizens of the 95th district because as your delegate my main focus above all else would be to fight for your needs and concerns."
